Roll-on-Roll-off involves loading on to or unloading from a ship a road vehicle, a wagon or an ITU on its own wheels or on wheels attached to it for that purpose (European Commission definition). Ships using this type of horizontal handling are called Ro-Ro, short for « Roll on, Roll off ». Transfers take place using a ramp situated usually at the ship »s stern. Some are also equipped with bow or beam ramps to make transfer operations easier.
