Intra-continental waterway traffic in ITUs

This relates to the transport of goods previously packed in containers via inland waterways between two inland ports. Specialist containers are used most of the time (for example for the transport of waste), i.e. 45 foot units.

The first intra-continental services of this type were for the transport of household or industrial waste. Such services exist in France in Nord-Pas de Calais and the Paris region. As with other inland waterway transport services, it offers competitive pricing, reliability, security and a reduced level of inconvenience. It involves services dedicated to principals whose volumes are both large and regular.

More recently, other markets have been created, notably on the Seine, which are becoming involved in the transport of industrial products.

In the short term, developments are being studied relating to the transport of palletised products packed in 45 ft boxes.
